Abberation Cinematographer Post-production Journal

Summary

My involvement in the post-production process was vast through multiple post-production fascists. This includes finishing working on Sound Design with Emerson and Tyler. I also helped Tyler with knowing where the shots should be placed in the final edit.

Evidence of Further Contribution

Evidence of Further Contribution with Director:

Removed Shot

Evidence of Continued Contribution with the Editor:

Helped with where to put shots.

Scheduling Re-Shoots as a result of the Editing Process: We didn’t do any reshoots.

Other Contributions: Finishing making the soundtrack on Soundtrap.

How I Could Have Improved The Film

Examples of Suggested Cinematography: The wide shot could have been wider to establish more aloneness. The advisors thought that we could have a shot establishing who the text was from.

Other Recommended Changes to the Film: Establishing who the text was from by having Emereson pick up her phone before replying to the text.

What I Learned

Throughout Aberration’s production, I learned that we should trust the filming process even when it didn’t appear as if the film was going to turn out well. This film proved this as it turned out relatively good even when production was troubled.

Aberration Cinematographer Production Journal

Summary:

My involvement in the production process was a lot as I composed the shots and uploaded the footage.

Camera Evidence:

Evidence of Camera Preparation:

Image of me setting up camera and erasing old files.

Evidence of Camera Movement :

Camera follows Emerson when she stands up from chair

Evidence of Camera Angles:

Camera angle showed paper go past and surprise Emerson.

Evidence of Camera Shot Design:

Shows shots that we decided to keep and get rid of.

Shot Choice Justification

In the shot where Emerson is standing up and it is revealed that the friend is gone we used a wide shot to symbolize the loneliness Emerson feels in that moment.

This helped the scene feel more impactful.

Lighting Design

Evidence of How Lighting Design Created Mood: Somber Mood

Evidence of How Lighting Design Created Atmosphere: Sad and depressing atmosphere.

Evidence of How Lighting Design Created genre: Evidence of drama genre through how there was conflict.

Consultation with Editor

Me and Tyler worked to make sure all of the shots were included in the film and that nothing was missing.

Alternative Shots

Evidence of Alternative Shots:

Why you chose the shot you used in the film: We chose this shot as doing a circular 180 as we had originally proposed didn’t fit our film and our timeline.

Camera Work and Lighting Evaluation

Evaluate the artistic level: On an artistic level, I think our film excelled due to its close-to-home themes and dark lighting.

Evaluate the technical level: On a technical level, I believe our film lacked due to the changing in our decisions often and time constraints.

Influences from Films

Name Cinematographer:Linus Sandgren

Name some films they worked on: La La Land

They influenced the work throughout the film by using Emerson’s yellow shirt. Its bright yellow resembles La La Lands outfits that represent fakeness/fake happiness. This contrasts with the friend’s more laid-back outfit being a more true route to happiness, unlike the yellow shirt’s symbolism of fake happiness.

What I Learned and Problems I Solved

I learned more about how to convey a story from your mind to a real film and how to improve on this in a future film. One problem we solved was we needed an extra person to turn on a light and to do that we got Gavin.
